What a social media agency actually delivers each month

If you are a business owner or marketing lead in Pakistan paying, or considering paying, a monthly social media retainer, there is a good chance you cannot say precisely what you should receive for it. You may know an agency will “manage Facebook and Instagram”, but does that include Reels, customer replies, paid ads or reporting? Most agencies do not explain the scope clearly enough, which creates frustration by month two. Unboxed works across strategy, creative production and digital marketing, so we know clearly defined deliverables matter before the first post goes live. This guide explains what a social media agency does monthly, what is commonly charged separately, and what you should question before signing a retainer.

Pakistan had around 79.9 million active social media user identities in October 2025, according to DataReportal. These figures are not the same as 79.9 million unique individuals, but they show the scale of social media activity in the country.

The Monthly Cycle at a Glance

A properly managed account should operate as a cycle rather than a pile of disconnected posts.

A typical month may look like this:

  1. Final week of the previous month: strategy, campaign planning and content calendar preparation.
  2. Week one: copywriting, design, video editing and client approvals.
  3. Throughout the month: scheduling, publishing, community management and monitoring.
  4. Month end: reporting, analysis and planning changes for the next month.

The exact workflow varies, but strategy, content creation, publishing, engagement and reporting are the main components of ongoing social media management.

You are not simply paying someone to “make 12 posts”. You are paying for a repeatable process that decides what to communicate, creates it, publishes it properly and learns from the results.

Strategy and Planning

One of the first monthly social media agency deliverables should be a content plan.

A useful calendar should show:

  • which platforms are being used
  • planned topics and campaigns
  • content formats
  • relevant dates
  • approval deadlines
  • publishing dates

For Pakistani businesses, planning cannot simply be copied from an international calendar.

Depending on the brand, the month may need to account for Ramadan, Eid, Independence Day, wedding season, cricket tournaments, school admissions, seasonal demand or major ecommerce sale periods.

That does not mean posting about every event.

A B2B software company probably does not need the same Eid campaign as a clothing retailer. Good strategy means deciding what is commercially relevant rather than joining every trend.

The client also needs to provide information early. Product launches, offers, stock issues and business priorities should reach the agency before content production starts.

Approval matters too. Ideally, one person or a small authorised team should approve content. If four departments are separately revising the same caption through WhatsApp, even a strong content calendar quickly stalls.

Content Production

Content production is the most visible part of a social media management services list, but also the area where proposals can be most misleading.

Two agencies may both write “content creation” while providing very different levels of work.

Graphic design

A small or medium-sized business might receive, for example, around 8 to 16 feed posts per month, supported by stories, campaign graphics or carousels.

That is an illustrative range, not a universal standard or an Unboxed package.

More posts are not automatically better. Twelve useful pieces of content can be far more valuable than thirty filler graphics created simply because a contract promised daily posting.

Copywriting in English and Urdu

Copy should fit the audience.

An Islamabad B2B company may communicate mostly in English, while a mass-market consumer brand could need English, Urdu or Roman Urdu.

The wording should also change by platform. LinkedIn copy should not automatically be pasted underneath an Instagram Reel, and TikTok content should not feel like a recycled Facebook caption.

Short-form video

Video is often the first thing reduced or removed from cheaper retainers because it takes more work than adapting static templates.

If a proposal includes “video content”, ask what that actually means.

Is the agency filming original content, editing footage you provide, creating motion graphics or using stock assets?

A monthly plan might contain several Reels or TikToks alongside static posts and stories rather than large volumes of professionally filmed content.

If short-form video is important to your strategy, read our guide to TikTok marketing in Pakistan.

Professional filming, presenters, locations and production crews often require a separate budget. A cheaper retainer that excludes shoot days is not necessarily poor value. The problem is when the exclusion is not explained.

Publishing and Scheduling

Once content is approved, somebody still needs to prepare and publish it correctly.

That can include:

  • caption formatting
  • links and tags
  • thumbnails
  • platform-specific dimensions
  • scheduling
  • checking failed or rejected uploads
  • adapting when platform conditions change

Posting times should increasingly be based on the behaviour of your own audience rather than generic advice such as “post at 7 PM”.

A Karachi restaurant and an Islamabad B2B consultancy may have completely different audience patterns.

Platform choice matters too. Pakistani audiences are spread differently across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube, so most businesses do not need to be equally active everywhere.

Community Management

Community management is one of the easiest things to assume is included when it may not be.

A company hires someone for “social media management”. A customer posts an angry comment on Tuesday. By Friday, the company discovers management only meant publishing posts.

Ask whether the retainer includes:

  • public comments
  • direct messages
  • brand mentions
  • spam moderation
  • basic customer questions
  • complaint escalation

Then ask about response expectations.

Does someone monitor the account throughout business hours? Once daily? Are weekends included?

The agency does not need to resolve every customer problem itself. Refund disputes, technical complaints or serious delivery issues may need to be escalated internally.

The important thing is to agree on that workflow before the complaint arrives.

Lower-cost arrangements often exclude community management completely, so never assume it is included simply because the proposal says “account management”.

Paid Ads Management, When It Is in Scope

Paid advertising is often separate from organic social media management.

There are usually two different costs:

Management fee: what you pay someone to create, monitor and optimise campaigns.

Ad spend: the media budget paid to Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn or another advertising platform.

Do not assume one includes the other.

If you are comparing retainers, our guide to social media marketing costs in Pakistan explains the wider pricing structure.

For advertising specifically, see our guide to social media ads costs in Pakistan. We will not repeat platform pricing here because ad budgets should be evaluated separately from organic monthly deliverables.

Reporting

At month end, you should receive more than screenshots showing that follower numbers increased.

A useful monthly social media report in Pakistan should track metrics connected to the objectives agreed at the start.

Depending on the campaign, that could include:

  • reach and impressions
  • engagement
  • audience growth
  • website clicks
  • click-through rate
  • enquiries or leads
  • conversions where tracking exists
  • cost per lead when ads are running
  • strongest and weakest content
  • recommendations for the next month

A report with no business metric in it is not a useful business report.

If the objective is lead generation and every slide talks about likes, the reporting is avoiding the real question.

That does not mean every organic post must produce a directly attributable sale. Social media can support awareness, consideration and trust before a customer converts elsewhere.

The agency should still explain how activity connects to the commercial objective.

Our guide to social media marketing ROI in Pakistan explains how to evaluate this without reducing everything to follower counts.

What Is Usually Not Included

What is excluded can matter just as much as the social media marketing services list itself.

Separate costs may apply to:

  • professional photography
  • dedicated video shoots
  • actors, models or presenters
  • studio or location hire
  • influencer fees
  • product gifting
  • ad spend
  • website changes
  • packaging design
  • complete branding projects
  • large campaign productions
  • complex animation or VFX

Clear exclusions are not a bad sign.

The problem starts when a proposal says “video included” and the client imagines a professional filming day while the agency means three edits made from existing footage.

Anything requiring additional crew, equipment, locations or significant production time may need a separate budget.

Red Flags in a Social Media Agency Proposal

Before signing a retainer, look beyond the presentation deck.

Guaranteed follower numbers

No agency controls platform algorithms or audience behaviour. Be cautious of guaranteed follower growth.

No named deliverable counts

“Regular content” is too vague. The proposal should explain approximately how many posts, stories, videos or other assets are included.

No reporting cadence

Ask when reporting happens, what is measured and who will explain the results.

No approval process

There should be a clear route from draft to approval to publication.

No clear scope or agreement

Responsibilities, payment terms, content rights, cancellation terms and additional-work procedures should be defined.

They will not tell you who does the work

Ask whether strategy, copy, design and production are handled internally, by freelancers or through outside partners.

Outsourcing is not automatically a problem. Lack of transparency is.

You may also discover that an agency is not the right solution at all. A small business that only needs occasional graphics and already handles strategy and customer replies internally may get better value from an individual specialist.

Our comparison of a social media agency vs freelancer in Pakistan explains when each model makes sense.

So, What Should You Expect Each Month?

By month end, you should be able to answer six questions:

What was planned?

What was created?

What was published?

How were customer responses handled?

What happened as a result?

What will change next month?

That is a better way to judge a retainer than counting posts.

If your company already has strategy, copy, design and customer support internally and only needs someone to upload finished content, a full-service agency may be unnecessary.

If you need strategy, content production, publishing, community management, advertising and reporting to work together, an integrated team can make more sense.

Unboxed provides social media marketing services in Pakistan alongside wider digital, design and creative-production capabilities. That does not mean every business needs every service. Scope should follow the actual requirement, which is why Unboxed quotes are custom rather than published as fixed package tiers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many posts a month should I expect from a social media agency?

There is no universal number. An arrangement might include around 8 to 16 feed posts plus stories and several short-form videos, while another business may need fewer, higher-production pieces. What matters is that the proposal clearly states the agreed quantity and formats.

Is ad spend included in the monthly fee?

Not necessarily, and often it is separate. Organic management, paid ads management and the actual media budget can all be different costs. Confirm each before comparing proposals.

Who owns the content and social media accounts?

Your company should retain control of its business accounts. Content ownership and usage rights should also be set out in the agreement, especially where photography, video, music, stock assets or influencers are involved.

What happens if I am not happy with the work?

Identify whether the problem is creative quality, missed deliverables, communication or weak performance. Raise issues early. The agreement should also explain revisions, notice periods and cancellation terms.

How long before I see results?

There is no universal timeframe. Publishing consistency can improve immediately, while audience growth, organic demand and lead generation need enough time and data to judge properly. Paid campaigns can generate performance data faster, but no responsible agency should guarantee a particular revenue or follower result.

After the first few months, the better question is not simply, “Did our followers increase?”

It is: Has the agency learned what works, and is it making better decisions because of that evidence?
